What danger lurks inside those walls?

Description:

This course covers wall structures, beginning with an overview of their general purposes, types, and materials. Characteristics of and design considerations for stud walls, masonry walls, reinforced concrete walls, tilt-up walls, and retaining walls are presented.

After completing this course, a professional should be able to:

  • Briefly describe the two ways of framing wood stud walls: platform framing and balloon framing
  • Explain the difference between reinforced brick masonry and reinforced concrete block masonry
  • State the advantages and disadvantages of masonry walls
  • Explain the difference between reinforced and unreinforced masonry walls
  • Identify the importance of the joinery of tilt-up walls to the surrounding members
  • Name and briefly describe the three types of retaining walls used to change ground elevation
  • List the reasons for wall failure and identify prevention planning methods
  • Define the term maximum bending moment and explain its significance with respect to cantilever and basement walls
